South London Statue Project

About us

About us

In June 2020, the BBC reported that of the 175 named statues built since 2007 across the UK, only 21 were of black and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals, including 11 of black individuals. Of these, just six of the statues were of black Britons.

In April 2018, the BBC reported that  ofthe 828 statues it recorded by the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association in the UK, 174 of them were female - around one in five.

No statistics are currently available that list the presence of LGBTQ+ or disabled figures in the UK and London.

The South London Statues Project is dedicated to mapping the lives of marginalised heroes of South London. Our hope is that our research might be used to inform and promote proper commemoration for these remarkable people.

The South London Statue Project Map

Our map lies at the heart of the project. We are mapping places of birth, residence, work and death of marginalised people and communties – including but not limited to BAME, LGBTQ+, disabled, women and minority relgious communities – as a first step in campaigning for permanent and lasting memorial and remembrance.

We want to engage local people in these efforts. If you have any comments about people included in the project, or would like to suggest an addition to the project, please submit your recommendation using the form below.
